EPISODE 297: “I Will Just Build A Fire;” No You Won’t

December 11, 2017
Watch Now:

Today on Gritty, I’m joined by John Barklow and Chris Derek. John is the Big Game Product Manager at Sitka Gear and Chris is the Whitetail Product Manager at Sitka. AND, I am joined by Sloane Brown from Backbone Media, a public relations, social media and content marketing agency for active lifestyle brands. AND I’m joined by my good friend, Casey Harbertson, partner and owner of MTN OPS.

The group of us were invited to Sloane’s family ranch in Texas to hunt whitetails. And although we talk whitetail hunting on an upcoming episode--this episode is more technical in nature--it’s about survival, it’s about managing moisture within your chosen clothing system. It’s about hunter responsibility. It’s about staying gritty in hostile and sometimes deadly conditions. By the end of this episode you should have a better understanding of clothing layering systems and when and why they matter. And, hopefully, as a result of this episode, you’ll be better prepared for surviving an extreme cold disaster. And after this podcast, if you’d like to learn more about A Navy SEAL Rewarming Drill, go to Sitkagear.com and search “Rewarming Drill.”

EPISODE 294: What’s In A Name? Creating A Brand with SOLO HNTR Tim Burnett

November 30, 2017
Watch Now:

Today on Gritty, I am joined by Tim Burnett, aka SOLO HUNTER and we talk about branding, marketing and business. Tim and I are in the business of content creation and so our branding and marketing discussion leans that direction. I really like Tim--he’s got a “what you see is what you get” personality that I find refreshing. And he doesn’t over complicate things--words like, “don’t be a jackass” are pretty easy to comprehend. Nonetheless, in classic fashion, I ask him to elaborate on the “jackass” statement just to be sure I fully understand it.

I ask Tim how Solo started. What’s the biggest mistake people make when creating a brand name. We talk about our objectives when we create content. And we talk about the importance of good business partners and how you know whether you have a good one or not. We agree that media consumption habits differ greatly from platform to platform, for example., from TV to FB to Instagram to Youtube to Twitter--and people have preferred platforms. We discuss the differences between platforms and we share our thoughts on how our messaging differs from platform to platform.

This isn’t all we talk about, but this intro gives you a good idea of what this show is about. I hope you find this episode helpful. In today’s world, nearly everyone is a content creator of some sort. So I don’t believe this episode is just for those trying to build a brand per se. This episode can help those who are actively involved in promoting the hunting life, conservation and life values. Finally, please know that Tim and I are by no means experts in marketing or content creation--we just know what has worked for us and we share it on this podcast.

For those who want to learn more about these topics, I recommend that you read the following books:

The Thank You Economy, Crush It, and Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook by Gary Vaynerchuk.
And for those wanting to start a new career and chase a more meaningful job, check-out the book START, by Jon Acuff. In this book, “Jon Explores the five stages every life goes through on the path to awesome and looks at what it takes to punch fear in the face, escape average and do work that matters.”

EPISODE 290: Olden Times, Grit & The Way Things Used To Be with Grandpa Joe

November 16, 2017
Watch Now:

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen I interview my Grandfather, Joe Lane. My Grandfather is nearly 90 years of age and his time on this earth is almost over. Every human being travels the road of life. And in my estimation, the best humans among us are the ones who travel their road with moral fortitude--the best among us are those who love the best they can. I know this might come across as fairytale-ish to some, but I truly believe this to be so.

My Grandpa Joe has never been a perfect man. But I can say with certainty that he has always loved; and although that love maybe imperfect, it’s always been at the heart of who he wants and strives to be and he has modeled well for me how a man should love and cherish his wife.  And what higher endeavor can a man aspire to than to love and reduce suffering in the world? There are those in this world who honestly “TRY” to be a good person. And there are those who make no effort at all to be “good.” My grandfather is the former--and for that I am deeply grateful. My Grandpa has always been a prominent figure in my life. He’s always been a strong man. A man of grit and determination. He’s honestly one of the most physically tough human beings I’ve ever met. Growing up during the Great Depression and in a state of abject poverty he was hardened and forever shaped by the rigors of his youth and on this podcast, myself, my sister, Katie and her husband Bryce talk with my Grandfather about his interesting and diverse life. Things aren’t like they used to be. We’ve traded root cellars for refrigerators and horses for cars. We have smart phones and iPads. And very few of us are in danger of starving to death or dying from Scarlet Fever. So take a listen to this long conversation and then stop complaining about the traffic, or your job, or how things aren’t fair because they could be a whole lot worse. In the words of Jordan B. Peterson, “Pick up your damn suffering and bear it. And try to be a good person so you don’t make it worse.” Because, “Since Auschwitz we know what man is capable of. And since Hiroshima we know what is at stake.”

In other words, man is self-determining AND life has meaning. So act like it. Live a life that is intrinsically good and worth remembering.

EPISODE 289: Randy Newberg & Gritty Bowmen Converge in Boze-Angeles

November 7, 2017
Watch Now:

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, I get to hang out with the one and only Randy Newberg! Randy Newberg identifies himself as a “hunter.” Growing up in a small town in the midwest--Randy spent a lot of time running around on public land hunting and trapping small game. I would say that Randy is the quintessential “Public Land Hunter” and he uses his platforms to advocate for hunters and public access. In addition to representing hunters in Congress and state legislatures, he serves as a volunteer and board member for many hunting and conservation groups. I can honestly say that Randy Newberg is one of my favorite people on the planet. He says what he means and and means what he says. And if you don’t like what he has to say, well then, you’ve mistaken him for someone who gives a damn. Follow Randy on Instagram and facebook and check-out his youtube channel for some good public land hunting films.

EPISODE 276: From Anti-Hunter to Hunter with Samantha Reynolds & Michael Barry

August 22, 2017
Watch Now:

I was fortunate to meet Samantha Reynolds and Michael Barry at the @ladieshuntingcamp this summer. As I got to know them I was impressed by their perspective and attitude toward hunting. I felt as though these two individuals embodied the "new hunters" that Shane Mahoney (@conservation_visions) spoke of in the last podcast. Sammy isn't quite sure if she's ready to hunt; but Mike is committed and Samantha supports him. I hope this episode gets you thinking about hunting, why you do it, and how you represent hunters at large.

EPISODE 275: Conservation Matters with Shane Mahoney

August 18, 2017
Watch Now:

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen I talk with Shane Mahoney. Shane Patrick Mahoney is the President and CEO of Conservation Visions Inc.. A Newfoundland native, he holds both an Honors and a Masters of Science degree in Zoology from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Mahoney has over 30 years experience working primarily as a scientist, wildlife manager, policy innovator and strategic advisor.

Shane is a brilliant and passionate conservationist. And he has been working on a massive project called “The Wild Harvest Initiative.” Shane explains it like this: Safe, healthy food is important to everyone. Every year, some 40 million citizens in the United States and Canada take to the fields, mountains, forests, streams, and lakes, returning with a harvest of wildlife and fish to feed their families and share with friends. Just how much of this natural, organic food do these two nations provide annually, and how valuable is it to our societies? At this point, no one really knows. “It’s time we did know,” said Shane Mahoney, founder and CEO of Conservation Visions, Inc., a private conservation organization focused on building broader coalitions in support of biodiversity and the natural world. “We’ve known for well over a century that conservation of the world’s ecosystems is critical to human well being and that the sustainable use of wild resources brings enormous and unique benefits to human beings everywhere.”

On november 30th of this year, British Columbia says it will no longer allow the trophy hunting of grizzly bears in the Canadian province.

Of the approximately 15,000 grizzlies in British Columbia, about 250 are killed by hunters annually, according to government figures.

Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development Minister Doug Donaldson characterized that level of hunting as “sustainable” in an interview with the CBC.

However, he says the decision to end trophy hunting is “not a matter of numbers, it’s a matter of society has come to the point in B.C. where they are no longer in favour of the grizzly bear trophy hunt.”

The key word in the above statement is “trophy.” As stated, the population of Grizzly Bears is robust and the harvest rates are sustainable; but regardless of these facts, Grizzly Bear hunting has been banned by the voice of the people. And something that was “legal” is not legal anymore. I’ve been saying this for a long time, legal is not an argument for hunting. As Steven Rinella recently said, “it’s legal for a man to cheat on his wife but nobody believes that makes it okay.”

Why did 90% of the electorate vote against “trophy hunting Grizzly bears?” If you’re a hunter, are you surprised by this vote? Is hunting even a relevant activity in today’s world? Why do people despise trophy hunting? What is trophy hunting? How have hunters in the United States and Canada portrayed hunting in the last 20 to 30 years? What motives and values do we display and promote on our TV Shows and Social Media Outlets? Does it matter? If we send the wrong message, what’s at stake?

These are the sorts of questions that Shane tackles on a regular basis. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to personally visit with Shane and have him as a guest on this podcast.

I hope you listen to this entire podcast and that it causes you to feel an increased measure of concern for wild animals and wild places. For, “hunters of have an inseparable relationship with nature and a responsibility to protect it.”

EPISODE 251: TESTOSTERONE, GUT HEALTH, SEX, & FOOD with Ryan & Hillary Lampers

June 8, 2017
Watch Now:

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we meet with Ryan and Hillary Lampers of Hunt, Harvest, Health.

So… about a month back--Aron Snyder hit the big 4-0. And I’m well on my way to 43. We’re not exactly old, but we’re not spring chickens either. We’re fit for two older guys--in fact, we’re in better shape now than we were in our early 30s--and we’re pretty happy about that. But father-time isn’t backing down and it’s more important than ever to live well--both physically and emotionally. And that’s why I’m pleased to have Doctor Hillary Lampers and my good buddy Ryan Lampers, aka Donnie Vincent Lampers, on today’s episode of Gritty Bowmen. Ryan is an absolute stud when it comes to bowhunting public lands. And his wife Hillary is a doctor--but not your regular, everyday, run of the mill doctor that I generally mistrust except in the case of dire emergencies; Hillary is the kind of doctor that actually treats root causes of physical distress instead of simply prescribing drugs to treat symptoms.

Hillary and Ryan started a podcast this past December called Hunt Harvest Health--and I’m so glad they did! I’ve been listening to their podcasts on backcountry meal prep, gardening, testosterone, cortisol and other hormones, gut health and the second brain, hunting and more. This past year has been a whirlwind of life-changing events for me. Admittedly, I’m not as fit or feeling quite as froggy as I did a year ago.

If you’ve got little kids around while you’re listening to this podcast, you may want to revisit this episode when they’re not around. This is a talk about health--it’s not time to be squeamish. We talk about things like poop, S.E.X., how to increase testosterone, love languages, etc. You’ve been warned.

Some of you may be thinking that this “health stuff” is boring or that this medical talk is way too complex--but it’s really not--and I truly believe it is life-changing information. So I encourage you to buck-up and take notes. And when you’re done with this podcast, go subscribe to the HUNT HARVEST HEALTH PODCAST and continue learning how to feed your Temple of Power.

May 17, 2017
Watch Now:

This episode of Gritty Bowmen is coming at you from Whale Pass  on Prince of Wales Island in South East Alaska. Our guest is our friend Ken Brough. Ken is a quiet unassuming guy, but if you spend a little time with him you quickly realize there's more to this man than meets the eye.

He’s an accountant by trade but an adventurer at heart. He’s been to some of the most remote areas of Alaska. He’s hunted brown bear, caribou, goat, and sheep to Sitka blacktail and big coastal black bears that Prince of Wales if famous for. A couple years ago Ken quit his accounting practice  and started a hunting outfit in whale pass on the island. He calls his outfit Prince of Wales Eagle Lodge. We purchased lodging at his place for two weeks. Ken caters to the DIY hunters who want to do everything on their own, as well as those who wish to be catered to. He basically set us up with a  place to sleep, a car to drive and a skiff to cruise the ocean shores with. On this episode we learn more about Ken. The enigmatic accountant/bush pilot. He tells us a few good stories about his adventures and the harrowing adventures of others who have explored Alaska’s wild frontier. Ken shares his knowledge about bears and about POW island and he talks about what drew him to the island. We talk bout the difficulty of judging the bears and the best time to fish the island. It’s good stuff. I hope you enjoy hanging out with this quiet unassuming man as much as we did. If you’re planning a trip to POW island give Ken and his lodge a look. You can find him on instagram @EagleLodgeAlaska. Give him a follow and checkout his website EagleLodgeAlaska.com
